Project Case Study

AI-Powered Exam Portal for Kids (English + Maths)

An adaptive practice portal designed for children preparing for age-appropriate English and Maths exams. It generates questions at the right difficulty, gives immediate feedback, and tracks skill growth over time.

Context

Most practice platforms either feel too generic or too rigid: kids repeat the same worksheet patterns, parents can’t easily see what’s improving, and feedback is often limited to “right/wrong”. The goal was a guided practice experience that adapts like a tutor—without making the child feel judged.

Problem

  • Mismatch in difficulty: questions are often too easy (boring) or too hard (discouraging).
  • Weak feedback: kids don’t learn from mistakes if they don’t understand why it’s wrong.
  • Low visibility: parents and tutors struggle to identify real gaps (grammar, inference, fractions, etc.).
  • Practice fatigue: repetitive content reduces motivation and consistency.

Approach

  • Adaptive question generation: created question templates by topic + difficulty bands (easy/medium/hard).
  • Skill assessment engine: tracked accuracy, time, and error patterns to estimate current mastery per topic.
  • Feedback that teaches: provided short, child-friendly explanations and “how to think next time” hints.
  • Smart progression: increased difficulty only after consistent success, and inserted reinforcement when gaps appeared.
  • Safe content controls: age-appropriate constraints + predictable formatting for exam-style practice.

What It Covers

  • English: comprehension, vocabulary, SPaG (grammar), cloze, sentence improvement, creative writing prompts.
  • Maths: arithmetic, fractions/decimals/percentages, word problems, time, measures, reasoning.
  • Exam skills: pacing, accuracy under time, identifying common traps.

Learnings

“Adaptive” isn’t just about making questions harder. The real value is knowing what to repeat, what to vary, and how to explain in a way a child understands.

Next Enhancements

  • Personalised revision sets (auto-build weekly practice from weakest skills).
  • Smarter marking for creative writing with child-friendly improvement tips.
  • Exam-mode simulations with timed sections and confidence scoring.
  • Parent insights that translate scores into simple actions (“Focus on inference questions this week”).
